Is there a way to batch export all your files in Evernote back to the original filetype (i.e., docx, PDF, pptx, jpg, etc)?
Yep. The simple answer is to use the Save Attachments menu item as already suggested. Beware that your file is already occupying disk space as part of the database so having a separate copy is duplicating storage - not too bad if youre storing documents of up to 1MB in size but a disaster if youre saving big pictures or course books with 234MB sizes; and there a risk unless youre careful to store your backup copies in a separate archive that youll make changes to a backup file instead of the one in your note and wind up with two versions of the same file. If youre worried about possible problems with Evernote it far better to keep separate backups of the database on an external drive. If your system crashes for some reason youll always have Evernote server copy of your files for backup. If that fails you can always re-create the database from your own backups. How to back up (export) and restore (import) notes and notebooks s Evernote recently introduced a Google Drive integration for Android and Web (other clientsing) which is also a good place to hold your files separately with a to an Evernote note for ease of access. How to attach Google Drive files to notes s -Whichever way you attack the issue though your data is your italic data - take good care of it and keep a local backup !
What do I need to read data from any file type, from pictures to pptx or txt or pdf, etc.?
Files italic are italic readable by any program on aputer (given proper permissions) regardless of the file . All files on aputer are stored as binary data and all of them can be read. However the data structure within files can vary and that's why there are file s. If you're given a file with some kind of data in it but you have no idea how to interpret that data and present it in some usable format you won't be able to do much. If you want to actually read and interpret any file you'd need to look up specification for that specific file then implement a program to parse the data out of the file. Some formats are proprietary so there won't be published information about how the data is structured within the files and for those one typically must reverse engineer the files to manually figure out how data is being stored. Forpression there are two different routes that are worth considering. In one you simplypress the file into apressed format that must be upressed to be read. This would be like creating a Zip file; any file goes in it'spressed into a new file then the file is upressed and the original file can be read. This method does not require any knowledge of file s and thus any file can bepressed using this method. In the second route you'd bepressing information in a way that is specific to a file and would result in apressed file that is still usable. This would require knowledge of the file specification because you'd need to know how to find the data within the file that you want topress and you'd need to know what other changes would need to be made to ensure the file is still valid afterpressing the datafor example some files have data length specifiers within the file which would need to be changed if you modified the data in some way. I think a good example of this would be image files like JPEGs; you canpress the file but the resulting file is still readable as a JPEG. One important thing to note is that generally the second route produces apressed file that has lost information that is unrecoverable so you can't take thepressed file and upressed it back to the original state as you could with the first route.

What is the laziest thing you have ever automated?
I was working at a satellite antenna manufacturer where they had several NASA and JPL contracts. They had a major shipment that needed to be made one week and the one shipping clerk they had who knew how to properlyplete the byzantine NASA shipping docs. process was out on maternity leave. So they gave the task to the guy who can never say no of course. Never knew anything about that process but I did know about a whole lot of other NASA paperwork so why not? What I didn realize was the way things were traditionally done it was a very dynamic process just getting the shipping docs.pleted. First there was a set of arcane forms like ten pages with blocks that had to all contain something or it was notplete. Most of the blocks represented the acceptance of a sheaf file or box of supporting documents. The acceptance was done by a NASA representative who was there all week just to verify and sign off every single box but in no particular order. Up to him what he worked on every day. One incorrigibly OCD nit-picking NASA Bureaucrat . he was. Perfect for aplex job where people lives were at stake so I did grant him that. Ok so once I got up to speed with all that came the real kicker; The Hard Part. That ten-page form had always traditionally beenpleted at thispany on a good OLD IBM Selectric writer. Yes they did have a decentpanyputer system that was not to be used by tradition. So every time the shipment auditor found a mistake or something to add the page it was on had to be redone by hand. Which happened all day long(!) italic Yeah for only one day. I went out on the Internet once I got home and found all of the different interactive .pdf versions of the form that were available for free and emailed a couple versions to my work PC. The next morning I filled the form with the info. I had so far which took about 3 minutes. Every time the guy came to hand me another page needing adjustment I took a five-minute break from my real job and made the update. My supervisor saw me doing this and made clear his suspicion that I was breaking some concrete process protocol. Oh Well italic Inevitably the auditor figured out that newly updated pages were no longering down the hall one at a time or at all and came to see what had interrupted my work. I showed him what I begun doing uncertain how he react. He just grinned put out his lower lip and said Finally you guys got the memo! No more crap to fix! italic Thank God I had some laziness left in me! Im pretty sure though that I didn make a friend of the guy I temporarily replaced; I done a real good job of permanently knocking over his rice bowl there. Oh Well italic
What are the best Python scripts you've ever written?
I am aputer engineer with 15 years of experience. I have created multiple python scripts (similar to many scripts described already ) for daily usage tasks. However my best python script would be facebook automation. The setup includes a selenium driver on firefox. The script is triggered once every 6 hours on a dedicatedputer. The scripts opens web browser and logs in with my account. Some of thing it can do are listed Parse my full friend list and create an xml with all relevant details. (This is important as later steps take action only on feeds from people in this created xml.) Scroll the feedpage and take actions on individual feeds. By default it will like any profile pic cover pic change. If other people congratulate my friend it can parse thement like the feed andment congratulation message. I am anonymous because most likely it against facebook policies to use this kind of scripts for daily interaction. EDIT 1 This edit section is for people who are interested in knowing how the whole script works. I will try to keep it minimal so that it doesn be too technical. The script has 3 main work areas Navigation Navigate to a webpage scroll the page etc. Action Take some action on specific element based on info collected. ordered-list Navigation Selenium driver gives the direct capability to launch a browser navigate to a scroll down etc. Hence this part is pretty much straight forward. Info collection This is one of the most hard parts. On firefox you can right click any element and inspect it . Inspect Element gives details of what the html code for an element looks like Here is a snapshot of what firefox shows when i inspect a friend name in my friends list. The class of div element is very important. I now know that whenever i will parse an element of this class it will have the details of my friend (name etc ) I first statically find these elements manually and then hardcode them in my script. I can now parse necessary elements and collect the information present in those via selenium. Selenium gives the api to extract each information of an element. For e.g. I can extract the href in above picture and i can save the of my friend. This example also covers first point of my script of how i created xml of all my friends. I need to parse my friends list only once and save it for future use until i add a friend. In a similar way we can parsements count events etc . Action Once we have collected the information we can apply our own programming logic to that information. For e.g if someone hasmented Nice picture we can post a similarment. Selenium provides the api to click on element in a area etc. So for like we simply click on Like element with that specific class. That all folks.
