This answer is a bit late but I think it might be useful for other people stumbling upon this page. Im a research scientist in machine learning andputer vision (in industry not academia). I did my PhD in machine learning on Linux (for the first half) and Windows and now I own and work on a Macbook Pro. At the moment I cannot rmend Windows mainly because so many major machine learning andputer vision software currently do not support Windows. I say this with a heavy heart because I think Windows 1 is great for work and because Im a gamer too. I will try to list the merits and drawbacks of OSX Ubuntu and Windows below. Please note that these are my experiences only; I will try to be as fair and factual as possible. Windows 1 Merits Great variety and choice of machinesmercially available. Great variety and choice ofmercial software. Good user interface makes working very smooth efficient. I prefer the Windows 1 UI over Ubuntu and OSX for work. Good for a bit of gaming when youre not working. Very popular scientific libraries such as Numpy Scipy Scikit-Learn and so forth will work on Windows. If you code C++ a lot Microsoft Visual Studio is very good in my humble experience and you can get (certain versions of) it for free. Thepetitor to Visual C++ (in my mind I may be wrong or iplete) is CLion which I love but currently doesn have a free version. Drawbacks Machine learning andputer vision software such as Tensorflow Caffe OpenCV Ceres Solver currently either do not support Windows or are extremely difficult to get working properly under Windows. I have painful personal experience in trying to build and using these software under Windows; theyre much easier to build under OSX and Linux. Having said that an open source Microsoft alternative to Tensorflow is CNTK although I have no experience in that whatsoever. As far as I know all of Windows laptops still use what I think of as the most ridiculous trend in laptop design the clickpad. Please note that this is biased personal opinion. General ipatibility with Linux and Unix systems. Using Cygwin or Putty or MinGW is fine but I personally find them ugly and inconvenient. But with the new Anniversary Edition Windows now has native support for Bash. Ive tried it actually very impressive. It more than just Bash it actually a whole Ubuntu subsystem within Windows (as far as I can tell) just without the desktop. BUT the Linux subsystem does not have direct access to the GPU which to me defeats the whole point of the Linux subsystem because you want to use the GPU for a lot of machine learning stuff like neural networks. Mac OS X ( Sierra) Merits Good UI for work. Not quite as convenient as Windows 1 in my opinion but still very good. Great variety and choice ofmercial software. It essentially Unix with an amazing UI so you get all the convenience of the Linux tools especially now that Homebrew is bing quite mature. All the software I use including Caffe OpenCV Ceres Solver and all the scientificputing Python libraries work very well. Touchpad; the new force touch Taptic touchpad. I know this sounds like a trivial thing and you might think Oh I don think that matters to me Ill just use a real mouse anyway. I can describe to you in words how convenient it is to use you just have to try it for a while. It makes working so much more efficient and less stressful. This feature alone ispelling me to stick with Macbooks at the moment (though I do suffer the occasional craving for Windows 1 until I use the dreaded clickpad that is). Everything is well thought-through. These are little things but so many of them that they together form a big factor in deciding whichputer to buy. Power management fan management (my fan is hardly ever on so it absolutely silent most of the time unless Im running simulations) screen size detection and font size management when connecting external monitors and so on. Drawbacks Not generally easy to upgrade. My advice is to just always buy the most expensive one. It might feel like a stab in the heart at the time but you won regret it after 6 months like I am now. Ive got the Macbook Pro 13 inch early 215 edition which is fine but it the cheapest model and now Im no longer happy with the RAM and especially the SSD (only 12GB). The RAM I can do nothing about because it soldered on to the motherboard and so Im stuck with it (pun intended). The SSD I can upgrade quite easily but as far as I can see the SSDspatible with this Macbook Pro model are about twice as expensive as other equivalent SSDs of the same storage. Im looking at about 25 q to upgrade to 48GB or about 5 q for 96GB. Next time Im going to get the maxed-out one and itll hopefully last me no less than 4 years. Not the right kind of GPU for machine learning. These days the Macbook Pro 15 inch ships with an AMD which runs OpenCL which right now isn as widely supported by machine learning software as CUDA which is only supported on Nvidia GPUs. Tensorflow doesn support it at the moment for example. But Im confident that this is a temporary problem. If Apple keeps sticking with AMD GPUs then I hope the open source machine learningmunity will soon be forced to write OpenCL-friendly libraries. Ubuntu 16.4 Merits Think of any machine learningputer vision or general scientificputing software. Think of anymercial or open source and itll probably work on Ubuntu. Configurable customisable and nowadays you have a choice of a few desktop environments including the stock Unity MATE Gnome 3 KDE to name but a few popular ones. If you play games at all don forget that Steam works natively on Linux now together with many popular game titles such as CSGO Rocket League LoL Dota 2 and some AAA games like Metro Last Light (is that still considered AAA or am I just old?). Free. Better than free open source. Drawbacks Ipatibility withmercial software. I regularly need to use Sibelius Photoshop Elements Premiere Elements and others and I wish they supported Linux natively. There are open source alternatives to all of these but theyre not nearly as easy and nice to use (and Ive used all of them) and not as stable and efficient. Limited choice of hardware especially laptops. Many laptops don support Ubuntu very well in that some things just don work. These things may include media buttons the fn key volume control buttons multitouch gestures on the touchpad the touchpad itself and many many other things. Even the laptops on the Ubuntu-certified hardware lists don work perfectly. (Ive recently tested the Dell XPS 15 955 quite extensively for the purpose of machine learning development for example. Great laptop by the way works very very well under Ubuntu but not as well as Windows.) Mouse. It so very bad. Both touchpad and mice feel really bad. Theyre inaccurate jumpy unpredictable just generally not nice to use. This is the most overlooked feature in my opinion. People don seem to realise that this should be the most important feature of an operating system because you use your mouse all the time. But this is just my personal experience and opinion. Other aspects of UI not polished. For example Unity Desktop can tell how big my external monitor is (which is quite big) and consequently can scale the screen output accordingly so for example I end up with huge font on the external monitor and tiny font on the laptop monitor. Again this seems trivial until you use Mac or Windows and realise it actually quite important. Ipatibility withmercial hardware. So many very well-made hardware especially mice don have official drivers for Linux. There are some very kind people who write Linux drivers for a particular brand or model of mice (Roccat for example) but it usually just some guy maintaining a driver for a couple of years and then giving up. I personally don like the idea of investing money in a piece of hardware and then relying on the kindness and the whims of some guy writing drivers for it for free.
